Alan Sharp
Birth: Jan. 12, 1934
Perth and Kinross, Scotland
Death: Feb. 8, 2013
Los Angeles
Los Angeles County
California, USA

Motion Picture Screenwriter, Novelist, Director. He is best known for penning the stories to the films "Ulzana's Raid" (1972), "Night Moves" (1975), "The Osterman Weekend" (1983) and "Rob Roy" (1995). Born in the village of Alyth in Scotland, he was adopted at the age of six weeks and raised in the town of Greenock, located on the banks of the Clyde River. At the age of fourteen, Alan left school and worked as a shipyard worker. After his National Service, he married and moved to London to concentrate on a career as a writer. Sharp's first effort as a writer was "A Green Tree in Gedde" (1965), for which was banned in Scotland due to sexual content however in spite of this, the work won the Scottish Arts Council Award in 1967. As part of a trilogy, the novel was followed with "The Wind Shifts" (1968) and "Don't Cry, It's Only a Picture Show". The latter was never completed due to Sharp's attention shifting to screenwriting. He already had script-writing experience with credits for the British TV programs "The Wednesday Play" and "ITV Playhouse", when he launched his Hollywood career with the Western "The Hired Hand" (1971). Sharp collaborated with Robert Aldrich on "Ulzana's Raid" and this picture would also mark the first of a number of projects that were associated with Burt Lancaster. He joined forces with Sam Peckinpah on "The Osterman Weekend" and added directing to his resume with the feature "Little Treasure" (1985). He co-shared an Edgar Award nomination with the TV-movie "The Last Hit" (1994). He died following a lengthy illness. (bio by: C.S.)
