Timothy Elliott Perkins

MOJAVE — Funeral services were held March 30 for Timothy Elliott Perkins of Mojave who passed away March 28 in Lancaster.
Tim Perkins was born March 13, 1922, in Tulare. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict, and served as a police officer and radio dispatcher in Tulare.
He joined the Kern County Communications Department and was the radio technician in Mojave from the opening of the Mojave Communications Center until he retired in 1981.
During that time, Tim maintained all the county radio communications equipment in East Kern, including units of the Kern County Sheriff, Fire Department, Roads, the Mojave Communications Center, and the repeater station on Government Peak.
He served as president of the Kern County Employees Association, where he worked to ensure pay, benefits, and fair treatment for county employees.
An avid reader, he earned a B.A. degree in English at California State University Bakersfield.
Tim Perkins was a skilled craftsman who used his skills to create archery equipment for that hobby, and to turn rocks he collected in the desert into jewelry and arrowheads.
He was also an avid amateur radio enthusiast and musician, playing the guitar and harmonica, and sharing his skills with others interested in learning to play.
He is survived by wife Roberta, and their children, Charles and wife Jarnie of Santa Cruz, CA; Sarah and husband John Knack of Port Orchard, Washington, and Susan and husband Todd Hill of Roseville, and seven grandchildren.
He is also survived by sisters and brothers-in-law Joan and Ornie McCallie of Tulare, Barbara and Loren Hill of Tulare, Lenore and Jim Clinton of Tenino, Washington, and sister in-law Evelyn Perkins of Visalia.
Arrangements were handled by Stickel Mortuary of Mojave.

Timothy Elliott Perkins, a 49-year resident of Mojave, passed away March 28, 2001 in Lancaster. He was born in Tulare, California March 13, 1922. He was the eldest of five children born to Naomi H. and Charles T. Perkins. He spent his youth in Tulare with his brother Jerry and his sisters Joan (pronounced Joanne), Barbara and Lenore. In 1941 he enlisted in the US Navy where he served at San Diego, CA; North Bend, OR; Los Angeles, CA; Ketchikan, AK; Sitka, AK; Anneta Island, AK; and Seattle, WA. during WWII. He was discharged honorably at the rank of Radioman First Class in 1945.
He remained in the Naval Reserves and returned to Tulare where he worked as a police officer and dispatcher. He then moved to Bakersfield, CA where he was employed in the Kern County Radio Communications Department. He was called back into active navy service in 1947. At that time he served as War Plat 12-10; at Receiver Station TI in California; on the USS Telfair and at San Diego, CA. He was honorably discharged in 1952 having earned the Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asia Clasp; the China Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal. During his military service, he also earned his Ham Radio Operators license and was one of only a small handful in the US to earn an F.C.C. Radio Telephone Operators license.
Following his service in the Navy, he returned to Kern County. He took a new position with the County as a Communications Technician in Mojave where he would live for the remainder of his life. There he met and married Roberta Fuson in 1962. He and Roberta raised three children. He earned his BA in Liberal Arts from Cal State Bakersfield in 1974. He spent eight years accomplishing this goal while simultaneously working full time. He retired in 1981 after a total of 40 years of government service.
His hobbies included cutting and polishing gems and rocks, chipping arrowheads, hunting, astronomy, archery, photography, pun and limericks, musical instruments - most recently taking harmonica lessons; playing the guitar, working with wood, making and repairing bows, violins and guitars. He also loved animals, especially his dog Maggie.
He belonged to several organizations including the Circle M Riders, H & W Archers, Double Mountain Bowmen, the NRA and the AARP.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jerry. He is survived by his wife Roberta and their children Charles and his wife Jamie of Santa Cruz, CA; Sarah and her husband, John Knack of Port Orchard, WA; and Susan and her husband Todd Hill of Roseville, CA. Their grandchildren are Scott and Justin; Elizabeth and Christopher; and David and Rachel and Daniel. Also, Joan and Omie McCallie of Tulare, CA; Barbara and Loren Hill of Tulare, CA; Lenore and Jim Clinton of Tenino WA: and sister-in-law Evelyn Perkins of Visalia, CA. Services were held Saturday, March 31, 2001 at 11 a.m. Arrangements by Stickel Mortuary.
