Aaron enlisted in the Confederate Army as his two older brothers had done, although he was too young to join with them in 1862. His enlistment papers give his date of birth as "1844/08/03" "Clintonville, Coffee County, Alabama. He was a Private in Co. A (Regiment not listed) CSA. He enlisted as A. W. Helms in August 1864. After he returned home from the war, he married Margaret Susanna Rudd in Coffee County, AL. They had 8 known children. Their oldest son, James Oscar Helms, according to his tombstone was born on September 11, 1869.
