Dr. John Andrews was the son of Sgt. Moses Andrews and Lydia (Root) Andrews. He first married Phebe (Lewis) Andrews and they had one child, Phebe. He then married Caroline (Bronson) Andrews and they had five children: Milton, John Jr., Abigail, Hiram, and Caroline. He was a schoolteacher in New Britain when the Revolutionary War broke out. He enlisted and served in the Battle of Long Island, Brooklyn Heights and New York City. He also served three other tours of duty, mainly in the continental line around Newburgh. Returning to New Britain, he trained as a physician and went into practice in partnership with his brother, Dr. Jesse Andrews.
