St. Matthews - Hampton N. Dent, 47-year old retired merchant of St. Matthews died early Tuesday in Orangeburg Regional Hospital. He had been ill six months.

He was born in Columbia, son of the late Richard F. and Carrie McConnell Dent. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. his wife, the late Sallie Prickett Dent, died last March.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at the graveside in West End Cemetery, conducted by his pastor Dr. W.N. Liddy. Dukes-Harley Funeral House at Orangeburg is in charge of arrangements.

Surviving are three sons, William P. Dent and Charles R. Dent, both of St. Matthews, and Lt. Harry S. Dent, in the Army, stationed in Yokohama, Japan; two other sons, H.N. Dent Jr. and Richard Clayton Dent, were killed during World War II.

Also surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Loretta Tallon and Mrs. Arzeale Canon, both of Columbia, Mrs. Bessie Valentine of Silver Spring, Md., and Mrs. Lillie Mae Hudson of Jacksonville; four brothers, W.M. Dent, C.D. Dent and D.G. Dent, all of Columbia, and W.F. Dent of Georgetown and a nephew, W.T. Hendrix of Columbia.
