Henry Monckton

British Revolutionary War Army Officer. The younger brother of British Major General Robert Monckton, he served in the British Army in the intial stages of the war as a member of the Royal Engineers. Wounded at the August 1776 Battle of Long Island, he was serving as Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the Second Battalion of British Grenadiers, Lieutenant General Lord Charles Cornwallis' 1st Division of Sir Henry Clinton's army, when the June 28, 1778 Battle of Monmouth occurred. There he was mortally wounded leading his men so close to the Colonial troops of General Anthony Wayne that he was captured, and his unit's colors taken. Brought to the Tennent Church (which was being used by the Colonial Army as a field hospital), he died of is wounds, and was interred in the churchyard. His sword was taken from him after he died, and was present by Captain William Wilson to Major General Marquis de Lafayette. It can be seen today in the Monmouth County Historical Assocation Museum in Freehold, New Jersey. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
