DESERT NEWS STAFF REPORT MOJAVE - A man who for decades was one of the most enthusiastic boosters of Mojave High School Mustang sports passed away last Friday in Lancaster. A funeral mass will be said Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church in Mojave for Robert John Vondriska, who served the Mojave Unified School District for 25 years until stricken by a stroke in 1975. Vondriska coached all sports in addition to teaching math and driver education, while dedicating his summers to the community recreation program. The stroke that slowed the man known as Mr. V, and Coach, did not dampen his enthusiasm and support for Mustang sports. He was a familiar figure at games in his scooter and around town. Bob Vondriska was born February 27, 1925, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Hazel and John Vondriska, Sr. He served the nation during World War II in the United States Navy. He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Betty, and daughters Debbie Verdaaonk, of Justin, Texas; Robin Schaefer of Las Vegas, Laurie Forrest of Bakersfield, Alison Ledgwidge of Mojave, and Nickki Ledgwidge of Las Vegas. Survivors also include stepdaughters Lily Mashouri of Encinitas, Mary Drewing of Redmond, Washington; and Sandra Okimura of Hilo, Hawaii, plus 28 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by Evelyn Vondriska, Bill Vondriska, and Max Montoya, Jr.
