Author. His novels are powerful, realistic accounts of the life of Norwegian pioneers in the Dakotas, marked by deep psychological insight into his characters. He is best-known for the trilogy that consists of "Giants in the Earth" (1927), "Peder Victorious" (1929), and "Their Father's God" (1931). All his work was written in Norwegian and then translated into English. Rolvaag was born on Donna Island, Norway. He emigrated to the United States in 1896 and worked as a farmhand in South Dakota. His three years there provided the material for most of his later fiction. He was Professor of Norwegian Language and Literature at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota from 1906 until his death. Rolvaag worked to promote cultural relations between America and Norway, and he was knighted by the Norwegian government in 1926. His other novels include "Pure Gold" (1930) and "The Book of Longing" (1933).
