The son of Adam & Sarah Riegel, in 1860, he was a farmer living in Oxford Township, Adams County. He stood 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 14 as a corporal with Co. D, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863.
He married Mary Ann "Molly" Shue and fathered Clarence C. A. (b. @1867) and John F. H. (b. @1869). In 1890, he lived in Hamilton Township, Adams County.
