MRS. MARY E. MUNGER
Memorial service for Mrs. Mary E. Munger, 2755 SW Buena Vista Drive, will be Monday at 4 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church. Private burial will be at Riverview Cemetery.

Mrs. Munger died Monday after three and a half years of hospitalization with Parkinson's desease.

She was born Dec. 6, 1883, in Evansville, Ind.

In 1905 she was graduated from Northwestern University, where she affiliated with Delta Gamma sority.

She taught a variety of subjects in high schools in Indiana, Louisiana and Oregon, and also at South Dakota State College.

She did social work in Hartford, Conn., and in the Peoples Institute of Portland.

She was active in the League of Women Voters, the American Association of University Women, and in groups working for world order and peace.

She was president of the now discontinued Consumers League of Oregon, and belonged to the First Presbyterian Church and the Portland Garden Club.

Survivors include the widower, Thornton T.; two sons, James D., Seattle, and Osgood H., Salem; four grandchildren and two sisters. Miss Lura Heilman, Portland, and Mrs. Frank I. Odell, Evansville, Ind.

The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to the Oregon United Nations Association.

MARY ERSKINE HEILMAN ENTERED THE CAPT. HENRY VANDERBURGH CHAPTER OF THE DAR IN 1911. SHE RESIGNED IN JAN OF 1913.

HER MOTHER WAS LURA FELLOWS HEILMAN, SISTER OF ALBION FELLOWS BACON, THUS MAKING ALBION FELLOWS BACON THE AUNT OF MARY ERSKINE HEILMAN MUNGER.

SHE MARRIED IN INDIANA IN 1916, THEN MOVED TO OREGON BY 1920.

YOU MAY ALREADY BE AWARE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF ALBION FELLOWS BACON. THE EVANSVILLE YWCA IS BASICALLY NAMED FOR HER.

SHE WROTE AND GOT PASSED VERY IMPORTANT LEGISLATION CONCERNING TENTAMENT HOUSING AND HEALTH…AT A TIME WOMEN DID NOT SUCCEED IN THIS AREA.

(IE)…….SHE,FOR EXAMPLE, SET THE PRECIDENT FOR HOW MUCH SPACE A FAMILY IN AN APARTMENT STRUCTURE MUST BE ALLOWED. CROWDING AT THE TIME WAS CONTRIBUTING TO THE GROWTH OF CASES OF TB. HER LEGISLATION BECAME A MODEL FOR MANY MAJOR CITIES IN THE UNITED STATES FOR HEALTHY FAMILY LIVING.

THE ABLION FELLOWS BACON (YWCA) IS PRESENTLY A SHELTER FOR HOMELESS AND BATTERED WOMEN. IT IS MUCH REVERED IN THE CITY OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA. ONE OF OUR MEMBERS, WHO IS A NURSE, THROUGHLY RESEARCHED ALBION AND GIVES AN EXCELLENT PRESENTATION ON HER LEGISLATIVE WORK.

THERE IS A SMALL OIL PAINTING OF ALBION IN THE FORMAL MEETING ROOM AT THE YWCA, PLACED THERE BY OUR DAR CHAPTER.

AS WE LOOK FURTHER INTO THESE RECORDS IT MAY BE POSSIBLE TO SEND TO YOU A SCAN OF HER DAR INDUCTION CERTIFICATE,1911.
