According to a family member, Matthew Locke McCorkle died in a hotel fire somewhere in Louisiana after the 1920 census was taken; and Hugh McCorkle joined the Canadian military before WWI and then when the US joined the war Hugh left Canada, changed his last name to that of his sister Sophronia Allen, and joined up in the US military to fight. He was known for the rest of his life as Hugh Lawson Allen.
