CARTERET - Second Lt. Edward I. Sul, 23-year-old navigator of a B-17 Flying Fortress of the Eighth Air force, was killed January 7, 1945, on a bombing mission over Germany, the War Department has informed his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Sul, of 103 Lincoln Avenue. His wife, the former Miss Emily Poremba, lives at 414 East Jersey Street, Elizabeth. Lieutenant Sul had been listed as missing in action.

Lieutenant Sal's wife and parents had made several fruitless attempts to trace the missing flier. They communicated with the families of the other members of the crew, but none had received additional information. No trace of the plane was found.

The lieutenant held the Air Medal with two clusters. He was cited for "meritorious achievement" while participating in bombing attacks on vital German industrial targets, Nazi airfields, supply dumps and gun emplacements in support of advances by Allied ground forces.

He was a member of the Fortress group which led the first American bombing attack on targets in Berlin and which was cited by President Roosevelt for its outstanding bombing assault on railroad marshalling yards at Munster, Germany in October, 1943. His group also shared a Presidential citation for its part in the historic England Africa shuttle bombing of an important Messerschmitt tighter plane plant at Regensburg, Germany in August 1943.
