John Hiram Lyon
John Hiram Lyon passed away Sunday, August 29, 2004, at home. He was 90 years old and a resident of California City, California for nearly 30 years, moving from the San Francisco bay area with his wife. Other residences included Los Altos, Mt. View, Palo Alto, and Menlo Park, all in California, and Winnemucca, Nevada. He was born in San Jose, California on February 3, 1914.
John was a pilot, businessman and a real estate salesman, broker, and appraiser. He was a graduate of Healds Business College. He was a pioneer in the aviation industry learning to fly at the age of 14 and obtaining his pilots license at 16 and shortly thereafter his instructor's license. He opened a flying school and charter flights at San Francisco Airport in the 1930s.
His love for his family was incomparable; a man of honesty, independence, and loyalty. He loved his country and what it stands for. He served in World War II as a pilot in the Army Air Corps as a Second Lieutenant. He was part of the reserve units in the late 1930s through the 1940s. He served proudly and with purpose. The home he had designed and built in Los Altos in the mid 1940s was innovative and far ahead of its time. A hangar was built attached to the house and a one-half mile long runway stretched behind the home. He was still flying in and out of the home until the late 1950s. He was truly a man of vision and purpose.
He is survived by daughter Nancy Jean Lyon LeGoullon of Valle Vista, CA, John Wilkin Lyon of Morgan Hill, CA, Charlene Mari Lyon Fjerstad of Sunnyvale, CA, grandchildren, Heather Marie Lyon and John Warren Lyon of Morgan Hill, CA, Kristeen Anne Fjerstad and Michael Aaron Fjerstad of Sunnyvale, CA, five step grandchildren and fourteen step great grandchildren.
Services were held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 3490 Susan Ave., Mojave on Friday, September 3, 2004 at 1 p.m.
Arrangements made by Stickel Mortuary, Mojave, California.
