Auto Accident Causes Death
Robert N. Jewett, 40 of 13385 Gilbert St., North Edwards, was pronounced D.O.A. at Mojave Hospital April 30 at 12.35 p.m. after Mojave Ambulance had rushed him there from a car accident 10 miles went of Highway 6 on the Kelso Valley Rd.
He was coming back to Mojave after dropping off a Robert Howerton at Weldon. Both men were reported as having been on a prospecting trip to Arizona. Mr. Jewett was a retired Army Captain.
The accident occurred at the top of the grade which is about midway between Kelso Valley and Highway 6, where Jawbone Canyon Road turns west. CHP investigators believe he went to sleep and missed a sharp turn, throwing the late model pickup out of control
It is not known what time the accident happened but the headlights of the truck were on, shining straight up. A passing motorist notified the California Highway Patrol substation.
Survivors include his widow Evelyn, one son Stephen, one daughter Kay of North Edwards, and his father John of Nebraska.
Services were held Tuesday, May 3 at 2:00 p.m. in All Faith Chapel with Chaplain Gary E. Penton officiating. Interment was in Mojave Cemetery with Turner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
