Woman Found "Nursing" 10-day old Body of Husband

The body of a man who had been deceased for approximately 10 days was still being jealously guarded and cared for by his wife when officers discovered the gruesome scene a few miles northeast of Mojave Tuesday night.
In the rented Cantil home of Thomas Otto Hughes Ivins, Kern County officers found his wife who at one time worked as nurse in-charge of a hospital floor keeping watch over the deteriorating remains of her loved one.
Friends who had been helping to deliver mail and groceries to the home of the elderly couple said Mrs. Ivins gave no hint of the fate of her mate. A coroners preliminary report estimated death had come on or about January 1st.
Officers gained forcible entrance January 10th and with the aid of flashlights found the woman keeping solitary vigilance over her husband.
The Kern County Coroner and Sheriff's officers at Mojave are now unraveling the gruesome story after a local welfare worker became suspicious .and requested help.
Mrs. Ivins was reportedly dressing sores on the corpse when officers forced their way in. She will be given a psychiatric examination to determine her condition. Ivins was born in Salt Lake City something like 74 years ago, and earned his living as an attorney before becoming interested in mining. Injured in an accident at the mine, he spent some time in a hospital where he met his wife to-be, a nurse. They lived for the past five years in Bishop, Mojave and. Cantil seeking low rent which would be compatible with social security benefits.
Neighbors in the friendly community of Cantil were more than helpful, but few people gained entrance to their home in recent months. One source said although they appeared destitute, money and un-cashed checks were found in the house.
Lieutenant Tom Shuell head of the local Sheriff's force commented that the case was one of the more shocking in his law enforcement career. "Money was not the problem" Lt. Shuel said "Two hundred dollars in cash was found in the house as well as several un-cashed social security checks".
The remains were taken to Kern General Hospital for autopsy.
