Marine Vet Of Many Battles To Be Buried

Full military honors will be accorded VeLoy Gene Humphrey when funeral services are held in the chapel of the Latter Day Saints Church Saturday at 2 p.m. The Marine corporal died Nov. 2, 1950, in Korea. The body will be escorted to Mojave from San Francisco by the Marines.

Humphrey was born in Mammoth, Utah, June 25, 1921. He was graduated from elementary school at Red Mountain and attended high school at Randsburg for two years and Antelope Valley Joint Union High School, Lancaster, one year. He completed his high school education under the GI bill after enlisting in the Marines on Aug. 21, 1940. He returned to graduate from Antelope High in June, 1946, in the same class with two of his sisters.

Humphrey served in Iceland with the 1st Marine Division from May 31, 1941, to March 26, 1942. He was in the Asiatic Pacific area from July 19, 1942, until Dec. 29, 1944. He participated in engagements at Cape Esperance, Guadalcanal, Pelelieu Island, Caroline Islands and landing operations against the Japanese at Cape Gloucester, New Britian. He was at Inchon, Seoul and Wonsan, Korea.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Humphrey, Mojave, four sisters, Mrs. Robert Gorman, Mojave; Mrs. Arthur Hill, Lancaster; Mrs. N.J. Theriot, Whittier and Mrs. Charles Bridges, Long Beach; one brother, S/Sgt. William H. Humphrey of the Marines, stationed at U.S. Navy Base, Portsmouth, Virg.

The O'Donnell Funeral Home of Mojave will be in charge of the services. Pallbearers will be members of the Marine Corp. Interment will be in the Mojave Cemetery.

Listed in cemetery records as a veteran.

Corporal Humphrey was Killed in Action, while fighting Chinese Communist forces, near the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
