Sergeant Stitzel served with the 590th Bomb Squadron, 395th Bomb Group, from the Ephrata Army Air Base.

He was one of nine airmen killed when B-17F Flying Fortress #42-29500 struck a mountaintop, 16 miles east of Ellensburg, Washington.

The crew killed were:

2nd Lt. Eryle W Boettcher
2nd Lt. Andrew L Bowman
2nd Lt. Ennis D Hake
S/Sgt. Edward T Miller
