Isaac was born near Princeton, Mercer Co., NJ, the son of William H. Blackwell and Elizabeth Van Dyke. He served as a private in Company F, 9th Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers, enlisting on 23 Sep. 1861 (mustered 18 Nov.) for a 3-year term of service. He was was killed in action at Roanoke Island, NC.

Note: His service is recorded on the Cranbury Soldiers Monument in Brainerd Cem., Cranbury, NJ, dedicated 1866.
