Curly Henson Succumbs of Serious Injury

Of all the things an editor dislikes to write, the obituary takes first rank, especially when it is that of a friend, for we counted, as did many other Mojave people John Henson affectionately called "Curley", as a true friend.
We will miss his smiling face as we enter his bakery for coffee for he always had a pleasant word for everyone along with a greeting that somehow lifted you out of yourself and made the whole day seem to start in a happy manner.
Curley and Addie, his wife, had been members of a charter fishing party composed of 12 Mojave people at Newport Beach on an all-day fishing party Sunday and on the way home, Addie took the wheel from Los Angeles and relinquished it to John at Palmdale.
It was while passing Avenue F in Lancaster on Sunday night at 11:35 p.m. that John momentarily relaxed and went to sleep at the wheel. The car swerved off the highway and turned over from which Curly sustained six broken ribs and Addie received a cut face and severe lacerations of her right leg.
The couple were treated by passing motorists and taken to the Lancaster Community Hospital where Curly died about noon on Monday. The accident was reported by Deputies R. E. Hughes and L. Dale of the Lancaster sheriff's sub-station. After treatment Mrs. Henson was returned to her home in Mojave.
John Ezra Henson, 51, was born January 11, 1898 in Kentucky and for 30 years had been a resident of "California, the last four of which he had spent in Mojave, as manager proprietor of the Mojave Bakery. He was a member of the Mojave Lions Club and of the local Chamber of Commerce and is survived by his wife, Adelaide, his daughter, Joy, of Los Angeles, four sisters and three brothers all residing in Texas.
The funeral will take place today (Thursday) from the Community Congregational Church at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Olin Collier of the Mojave Baptist church officiating, in charge of the O'Donnell Funeral Home of Mojave.
To his sorrowing wife and daughter, as well as the rest of the members of his family, we , can only offer our sincere condolences and say that we have indeed lost a true friend. May his spirit rest in peace.
