YORK Ruth E. Sheffer Gentzler, wife of the late Richard D. Gentzler, died on Thursday, September 8, 2011, at the Lutheran Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at Sprenkle Drive, York. The couple was married on June 17, 1939, in Centenary Evangelical Reformed Church, Winchester, Va., by the late Rev. Stephen L. Flickinger. Ruth was born on November 15, 1916, in Stoverstown.
She was the daughter of the late Ralph E. Sheffer and the late Rose Bentz Sheffer Leppo, and stepdaughter of the late M. Earnest Leppo. She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Richard D. Gentzler, II, M.D. and his wife, Constance P. Gentzler, who reside in Kiawah Island, S.C.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: Jyl K. Gentzler, Ph.D., who resides in Amherst, Mass., with her husband, David Levenstein, Esq., and their children, Eliza and Tessa; Cynamon K. Chawla, M.D., who resides in Raleigh, N.C., with her husband, Sameer Chawla, M.D., and their children, Naya, Jayden, and Deven; and Richard D. Gentzler, III (R.D.), who resides in Brooklyn, N.Y., with his wife, Sara Grant Gentzler, and their son, Maxwell. Her four siblings, Paul M. Sheffer, Eleanor A. Baublitz, Kenneth N. Leppo, and Rodney E. Leppo, are all deceased. As a life-long member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Stoverstown, Ruth was a Sunday School teacher in the Primary Department for many years and served on the Church Council, being the first female to serve in this position. She served as President of the Joint Council with the sister congregation of the Union Church.
Ruth was a graduate of West York High School and Thompson College. Employed as a secretary in the York County Sheriff's Office, she was the first female Deputy Sheriff of York County. She also worked many years as Deputy Clerk of the Courts. Later she was employed as a legal secretary in the Office of Amos Herrman before accepting a secretarial position in the Trust Department of the Drovers Bank, now the Fulton Bank. She was the first female to be named an Officer of the bank and later named Trust Officer, a position she held until her retirement in 1981. Mrs. Gentzler was a Life Member of Soroptimist International of York, serving two terms as President. She was on the Board of the Spring Grove and Hanover Visiting Nurses Association for many years and served two terms as President. She held memberships in many civic organizations in the area. She served on the Board of Directors of the Lutheran Social Services. Ruth was a long time member of the York Branch of the Auxiliary to Lutheran Social Services and was Chairman of the Membership Committee for many years. In the recent past she was President of the Sprenkle Village Independent Living Association Council. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Stoverstown, on September 13, 2011, at 10 a.m. with The Rev. Brad Dayett, D.D. officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the service.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family. The Irwin-Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service PC in Spring Grove is in charge of arrangements.
