Three Members of Family Die in Terrific Head-on Crash Saturday

Rosary was held Tuesday evening, and Mass at 9 a.m. on Sept. 7th for three members of a California City Family who were killed in a head on crash on Hwy. 14 Sept. 3, bout three miles north of Mojave.
The tragic accident which took three lives occurred on Highway 14 about three miles north of Mojave just after 4:00 p.m. on September 3rd. The case has been referred to the district attorney for possible prosecution of manslaughter.
According to the report of investigating California Highway Patrolmen, a southbound sedan driven by Paul H. Burchett, 36, of China Lake, was passing a line of cars and as he approached a slight curve on a hill, his view was obstructed and he was unable to pull back into the line of traffic. His car struck the back section of a 1959 sedan that was towing a 19 foot trailer, damaging the sedan and the trailer, and then hitting the car of Mrs. McDonald head on. The McDonald car was behind the trailer and unable to aviod a collision.
Mrs. McDonald and her daughter were pinned in the wreckage freed later by fire department members using the porta-power rescue unit. The boy was riding in the back seat and was nat pinned in the wreckage.
The three were pronounced dead at the Tehachapi Valley Hospital.
Also severely injured in the accident were passengers in the Burchett vehicle, 38 year old Charles W. Burchett, Sr. of Quartz Hill and 26 year old Samuel W. Kendall of Ridgecrest. The driver received only bruises and abrasions. They were all take to Tehachapi Hospital by Stickel Ambulance.
. The mother, Mrs. Mary Ellen Simpson McDonald and her step-daughter Patricia A McDonald were buried in the Mojave District Cemetery and son Robert C. Simpson was taken to Colmar Manor Cemetery at Fort Lincoln, Maryland for burial. Stickel Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. McDonald, who was born on May 17, 1931 in Pennsylvania, had lived In Califorma for six years and in Kern County for five years. She was employed at Western Electric Company, Mojave. Her survivors include husband Frank McDonald and sons, Jeffery Simpson of Maryland; Timothy, Christopher and Scott McDonald, and T. Simpson; a daughter, Robin Simpson of California City; also two brothers and two sisters.
Patricia Ann McDonald is survived by her father, Frank McDonald and her mother, Mrs. Billie McDonald of Hawthorne, Nev. She was born in California on June 16, 1951 and was a student of the Mojave schools.
Robert Christopher Simpson, who was born Oct 24, 1954 in Maryland, had lived in California and Kern County for four years. He too was a student at Mojave schools. He is survived by his father Rbt Simpson of Maryland.
