The Whitley bomber P5044 was returning home on completion of the mission to Bordeaux when it struck a barrage balloon cable and crashed in flames at Eastleigh. All of the five crew* from 77 Sqdn.Royal Air Force [RAF Driffield] were killed and were laid to rest on August 21st in a specially reserved Royal Air Force Burial area. There is a title deed in the Hants Record Office for this plot, with the area marked in red,[just like a house title deed], with an undertaking that the RAF must keep it in good order.The graves and the area are now maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
He was 19 and the son of Robert Morrice Macgregor and Carmel Gertrude Macgregor of Nairobi, Kenya, South Africa.
His mother's ashes were subsequently flown over from South Africa and buried next to the grave.
