William Eugene (Bill) Miller
William Eugene (Bill) Miller passed away on Sunday, February 15, 1998 at the Jerry L. Pettis Veterans Memorial Hospital, after being hospitalized for many months of complications from diabetes. He was 51.
He was the son of Thelma (Jody) Degraffenreid and the step-son of Lloyd Degraffenreid (deceased) of Boron. The father and father-in-law of Staff Sgt. James and Kerry Miller of Fort Wainright, Alaska and Samuel and Cindi Miller of Florida. The grandfather of Samantha, Corey, Bradley, James Lee Jr., and Kristin Miller. The brother and brother-in-law of Virginia (Cricket) and Steve Haugland of Boulder, Colorado, and Patricia and Barry Webb of Yucaipa, California. The uncle of Everett, Darrin, and Eric Webb, Scott, Ken and Craig Haugland, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Bill was born on July 31, 1946 in Zincville, Oklahoma and at the age of one he and his mother and sisters moved to Mojave to be near his mother's family, who played a big part in his life.
At the age of nine, the family moved to Boron where his stepfather worked and that's where he made his home the rest of his life. Bill loved sports and played them in school.
He served in the Navy from 1964 to 1968 and reached the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class. He was sent to Vietnam. He spent most of his service time there, earning the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with device; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with 2 bronze stars; Presidential Unit Citation, Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
He attended Mojave Elementary School and Gephart Elementary School in Boron, and Boron High School.
He served as President of Boron Little League and Commander of Boron American Legion and was affiliated with Boron VFW.
During his lifetime, he worked in aerospace, U.S. Borax and worked at carpentry and mechanics. He was very creative with his hands.
Bill attended the Emmanuel Church in Boron and occasionally, the Mojave Assembly of God Church.
Services were held on Friday, February 20, 1998, at the Assembly of God Church in Mojave with full military color guard and officiated by his cousin, Rev. Grant H. Frye.
