Bernard Finnin Retires From Postal Service

Bernard T. Finnin, postmaster at Mojave since Oct. 22, 1950, retired from the postal service October 31. Appointed acting postmaster is J.W. Thoms, who assumed his new duties last Saturday.

Finnin entered the postal service in May 1919, as a carrier at Lodi and served in that capacity until March 1925, when he was transferred to the railway mail service, working out of San Francisco, Sacramento and Mojave. During this period he spent 10 years working the mail on the Jawbone line. In 1944, he was transferred to the Mojave Postoffice as assistant manager. He was appointed acting postmaster Jan. 1, 1950, and became postmaster 10 months later.

During his regime, he has seen the doubling of receipts, the building of a new post office, installation of carrier service and parcel post delivery, and has witnessed the population grow from approximately 1,500 at the time he first moved to the area to the present 4,200.
