Donald E. Moore Badly Burned in Plant Accident

Donald E. Moore, son of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Moore; of Mojave was flown to the Brooks Army General Hospital at Fort Sam Houston, San, Antonio, Texas for treatment of severe burns. The accident occurred on Tuesday morning at the California Portland Cement Plant, eight miles west of Mojave when an electrical panel exploded.
The Calif. Portland Cement Company searching for the best care that could be obtained for the seriously injured man spared no expense in getting the best medical help for this type of injury.
Witnesses said Moore's Safety hat and glasses were almost pulverized by the blast, which knocked the kilns out of operation at the huge cement plant.
Two Army burn specialists and nurses were flown to Edwards from San Antonio and then made the trip to Tehachapi by ambulance to treat the badly burned man. Following this procedure they took off early Wednesday morning for the trip back to San Antonio.
A report from the camp only stated that a 440 volt breaker was thought to have been accidentally short circuited by a screw driver as Moore, and two other employees were working on it.
Less seriously burned were Dave Shuster, a regular employee of the plant and Phillip Hwang, a part time worker and an engineering student of a Utah University.
Don's burning clothing was removed and he was taken to Tehachapi Valley Hospital for initial treatment. He was a journeyman electrician and had been employed by the company for about 3 years.
His mother Irene, and wife, the former Glenda Wellman, accompanied him on the flight to the Texas Hospital.
The company had recorded almost 1,000 days without a lost time accident previously to Tuesday's accident and the company expressed deep sadness over the men's injuries.
