Boy dies on Backus Rd.
MOJAVE — Monday was the funeral for an 11-year-old boy who died after being struck and killed by a car on Sierra Highway south of Mojave on February 21.
According to California Highway Patrol officer Don Todd, Daniel Robert Hernandez Jr., of Mojave, was playing soccer with two other boys alongside Sierra Highway about a quarter-mile north of Backus Road around 2:25 p.m., when his ball rolled across the road.
Hernandez ran onto the highway to retrieve the ball and was struck by a southbound 1981 Cadillac driven by William Gerald Baldridge, 41, of Rosamond.
Todd and another officer reported they performed CPR on the youth until medical aid arrived. Hernandez then was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:39 p.m.
"Baldridge swerved in an attempt to miss the boy, but was unable to avoid the accident," Todd said, "No charges will be filed."

Why?
by Ashley Van Ostrand
I remember that night
so clearly in my head
I cried my heart out,
when I heard you were dead.
Why did it have to be you?
I ask myself this everyday.
I ask God the same question,
every time I pray.
I was just talking to you,
this afternoon.
Why did you have to go
so soon?
I'll always remember
the smile you had.
Even though remembering,
makes me so sad.
I wish your life,
didn't have to come to an end.
But to you,
my love I'll always send.
This poem is dedicated to Daniel
Hernandez, a friend of mine. I wrote it after he was hit and killed by a car on Feburary 21, 1996 I'll always remember him.
