Joe Huntington Dead at age 85
Mr. Joe Huntington Murphy the last surviving member of the University of West Virginia Championship Football Team of 1900, and a former catcher with the Cincinnati Reds, passed away in a Bakersfield Hospital on Feb. 19, 1966 after a lengthy illness.
Joe was well over 6 ft. tall and stood as straight as a ramrod. His manner was gruff except to children. But perhaps this was caused by his living alone most of his long life spent in practically every state and Mexico.
He was known to his many friends in Mojave as “Joe Huntington” and had also worked as a street car motorman in New York City.
Born in Parkersburg, West Virginia August 4, 1880, Joe had lived in Mojave over 20 years, most of these at the Elite Hotel. He retired as S.P. railroad clerk in 1959.
Rosary was said at the Stickel Chapel in Mojave at 8:00 p.m. on Feb. 22nd and the funeral was at 10:30 a.m. on Wed. Feb 23, 1966, in St Francis Catholic Church with Father James Mahoney officiating. Burial was in the Mojave District Cemetery.
Surviving is his brother William J. Murphy of Parkersburg, West Virginia.
