John was born 5 June 1794 in Sinking Creek, Greenbrier, Virginia [West Virginia]. The 5th son of Thomas Blake 1760 – 1835 and Jane Jerusha Warnick 1761 – 1811. John Blake was a soldier in the War of 1812. He joined the regiment of Capt John Mc Clung's Company, Virginia Militia in May, 1814, rank Private. The Company was sent to Hampton in June. In July he "took the fever" and was discharged: 27 Jul 1814.
He met Helena Newton 1801 – 1869, daughter of William and Nancy Newton, sometime after he was discharged from service in the War of 1812. They married 24 Feb 1816 in Greenbrier County, Virginia. Their son, William Tennant Blake was born near the mouth of Second Creek. They were the parents of William Tennent (1818-1879) Nancy (1820-1898)Jane Warwick (1822-1900) Minerva (1824-1892)Beverly (1827-1884) Albert (1830-1894) Hiram (1832-1908) Ezra (1835-1918) John Wesley (1837-1864) Martha Helena (1840-1926) John Wesley (1841-1864) died from spotted fever February 19, 1864, and Evaline (1845-1905). In the fall of 1819 the moved to Ohio and arrived st Madison Township in Jackson County and "ever after lived on free soil". They lived in Ohio until 1847 Helena died the 15th of June, 1869, with paralysis of a two week duration. From February 18, 1872 he drew a Pension of eight dollars a month for his service. John lived in Wyanet in 1870 when he was 76 years old.
