Donna was born and raised on a farm in Oklahoma and there learned to play music and sing. As a young woman she moved to California with her mother and brother and reunited with her older sister. Donna continued to play music and involve herself in church activities and appeared locally with Little Jimmy Dickens.
Later in her life Donna turned to her religion full time and became a lay preacher. She married Clyde Barley, also a lay preacher, and the two worked together until his death a few years before her. She continued her ministry after his death and cultivated a circle of followers and friends.
