Mary was born in Broughty Ferry, Scotland to Georgina Monaghan Nicoll and James O. Nicoll. She immigrated at age 4 with her parents and two siblings. The family settled in Pittsburgh and Mary became a U.S. citizen at age 12. She married Capt. Robert Thomas Tash during World War II and moved to Oxnard to live with his parents while he served in the Army Air Forces Bomb Command in the Pacific Theater. She gave birth to their only child, Mary (Mimi), in April 1945.
Capt. Tash died on a B-29 Super Fortress training mission over Guam in August 1945 just days after the Japanese surrender. Mary cared for her in-laws until their deaths. She would wait 20 years to wed again. Her groom, Jay Watson Chapin, died one year and two days later. She never remarried.
Mary worked for 55 years as a highly respected executive secretary at the Oxnard law firm of Nordman Cormany Hair & Compton. Her daughter, who never married, passed away in 2002. Mary died at age 89 and left her estate of over $2 million to the Ventura County Community Foundation to be spent on projects to strengthen the community, preserve its cultural resources and help those in need.
