His parents hid him in a well to keep the Greek Army from taking him. They then shipped him to America to keep him safe. His brother Chris paid his way from Ellis Island (in 1907) to travel by train to Stockton, CA.

Petra and Steve Pulos Remarried After 50 Years

They came, one from Mexico the state of Chihuahua, the other from Argos, Greece. Her family came to the United States when she was a small child; he entered at the port of New York in October 1907.
Fate held that their paths were to cross and at Cable, California where he worked for the Southern Pacific as section foreman, she lived with her mother and brother; her brother also employed by the railroad. On April 24, 1920 at Bakersfield, California they became husband and wife.
Nine children were born to them, seven boys and two girls; one son Peter lost his life in France during, World War II.
They first came to Mojave in 1924. After a few moves from one railroad town to another they again chose to live here and have remained ever since. Many are the memories and varied the stories they have to tell about the early days and happenings in this area.
So it is that on Saturday, April 25th at St. Francis Caththolic Church, Steve and Petra Pulos renewed the vows made, so many years before. The Golden Jubilee Mass was officiated by Father James Maloney. A reception for them was held at the parish hall, and it was the privilege of family and friends to extend congratulations and wjsh them many more years of happiness together.

Services For Pioneer Resident Steve Pulos

The Requiem Mass will be said this morning, Thursday, July 21, at 10 a.m. at St Francis Catholic Church for Mr. Steve P. Pulos, 88. The Rosary was recited Wednesday night, July 20, at 7:30 p.m., also at St. Francis Catholic Church.
Mr. Pulos was born Oct. 10, 1890, in Argus, Greece, and passed away in Sacramento on July 19. He had lived in California for 70 years, and in Kern County 67 years. After retiring from the Southern Pacific Railroad, he was a caretaker at the Mojave Cemetery.
He is survived by six sons, Pablo, Bakersfield; George and Chris, both Mojave; Louie and David, both of Fresno, and Jimmy, Seattle; two daughters, Mary Mc Clanahan, Plymouth, Ca., and Susana McMillen, Lapwai, Idaho; 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. .
Father Louis Garcia of Bakersfield will celebrate the Mass. Interment will follow at the E. Kern Cemetery in Mojave.The pallbearers will be his six sons and his son-in-law, George McClanahan and Frank McMillen. Stickel Mortuaries are in charge of arrangements.
