Brian Harrington recored name as: David " Ellis " Hill
David Ellis Hill was born on January 30, 1867 near Leon, West Virginia in Mason County. He was the only child of Ira and Nancy Hill.
He married Elizabeth " Betty" Jane Newell on July 10 1886 and there were ten children born of this marriage: Okey Eksworth, Omar Gordon, Bertha Myrtle Hill, Ira Virgil, Kelley, Dell, Ray, Iva Alice, Ora Florence and Mary Katherine.
After their marriage, David and Betty moved to a home on Yeager Creek. David, who held a #2 teaching certificate, was a teacher for a short time at Yeager School sometime around the year 1887.
When his father became ill in 1891, David and Betty moved back to the family farm to assist his parents. The hilly terrain of the farm was not conducive to profitable farming. The family produced enough food for their own use but little to sell. David received some income from a blacksmith shop and from repairing watches. He also was a photographer. Friends and neighbors would come, usually on Sunday, and have their photographs made. The task of washing the developing solution from the film fell to daughters Iva and Ora. Iva was purposely careless, so Ora usually ended up with the job.
David's wife Betty died on September 24, 1917 from tuberculosis. Prior to her death, she called each of her children to her bedside and asked them to meet her in Heaven. After Betty died, the younger children went to live with relatives. David's elderly mother stayed with friends and David went to Leon to live. The farm was rented for a short time until David's son, Omar, returned to the farm from Iowa in 1920.
In the 1900 Mason County, West Virginia census for Union District David is listed as a 33 year old farmer. His wife Elizabeth is also 33. In the home are Omar G. age 11, Bertha M. age 9, Ira V. age 6, Kelley age 3, Dell N. age one and David's mother Nancy A. age 68.
In the 1910 Mason County, West Virginia census in Union District, Stevens Precinct on page 221b, David E. is listed as a 43 year old farmer. His wife Elizabeth J. is also 43. In the home are Virgil age 16, Bertha M. age 18, Kelley age 14, Ray age 8, Iva age 6, Ora age 3 and David's mother, Nancy age 78.
In the 1920 Mason County, West Virginia census in the town of Leon on Roll 1962, Book 2 and page 58b, David is listed as a 52 year old laborer. His wife is Mary age 44.
In a letter written to a man by the name of Frank by David on September 13, 1939 from Logan, Ohio he states, " I am a traveling salesman for a hardware company and will make my headquarters in Cleveland and will move there in a few days." He mentioned that Frank's age was 75. At the time that he wrote the letter, he was 72 himself. Whether he ever moved to Cleveland is doubtful. He was living in Logan, Ohio when he became sick in 1943. He had diabetes and other complications and died at the home of his son, Omar, in Columbus, Ohio on August 22, 1943 at the age of 76.
David and his wife Betty are buried in Smith Cemetery near Leon, West Virginia.
