Hellen was the eldest child of James Fenton Wyckoff and Caroline Whiting, originally of Seneca County, New York. She was born 27 January 1850 near Ovid in Seneca County, but as of the date of the 1850 census, the family was living in Catharine, Chemung, New York. By 1855, the family had relocated to Michigan, where James Jr. was born. It is likely that they were living with or near Wyckoff and Fenton relatives who had moved to Michigan before 1850. By 1857, the Wyckoff family had settled in Huron County, Ohio, at Bronson, where the youngest, Carrie, was born.

Hellen married Humphrey J. Gifford on Jan 11, 1869 in Huron County, Ohio. Humphrey and Hellen lived near the elder Giffords in Section Two of Greenwich township on the 50 acres Humphrey bought from John L. Eddy's heirs in 1868. There Humphrey raised cattle and sheep for market. Both husband and wife were charter members of the local Grange, and active in the Masonic Order. Humphrey also served on the local school board.

Their marriage was blessed with six children – Charles Lloyd, George David, Jane C., Howard Wyckoff, Nicholas Jenny, and Fenton Eugene. All lived to adulthood and like the generation before, four eventually left Greenwich to seek their livelihoods in New York, Connecticut, and Texas. Only Charles and Jennie remained in Ohio.

After Humphrey died suddenly at age 53 in 1896, Hellen remained in Greenwich Village at the house they had built on Townsend Street. In later years, after three of her children had passed away, she spent the winters in Texas with the youngest son, Gene. Hellen died at Gene's home in Port Arthur, Texas at age 80 on 16 December 1930. She was survived by her sons, George, Howard and Gene, 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
