Judge Jesse G. Sherrill, a Mojave resident for 49 years, died at his home last Saturday April 29. He was 81 and made his home at 16001 L St.
The Judge first came to Mojave in 1923 as a boiler maker for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He retired in 1946 after working for the railroad for 43 years. Six months after his retirement he was elected judge of the Mojave Judicial District, and served in that capacity for 13 years. He was a native of Lenoir, N.C.
A year after coming to Mojave, he was appointed to serve on the Mojave Schoo1 Board. He served on the Bd. for 26 years, until 195O. He was the clerk of the Board for 25 of those years. The auditorium at Mojave Elem. School was named for him and dedicated to honor his many years of service.
Judge Sherrill was also appointed as one of the original commissioners of the Mojave Fire Protection District when it was organized in 1941 and was still serving in that capacity at the time of his death.
He had been granted life-time memberships in Mojave Chamber of Commerce and the Mojave PTA. He had also been a member of the Lions Club and the International Order of Odd Fellows.
He is survived by his widow, Idas, at the home; a son .Kenneth of Brentwood; a daughter, Mrs. Esta Chapman, Ventura; a step-daughter, Mrs. Peggy Rollins, Mojave; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Washburn at the Mojave Baptist Church at 2:00p.m. on May 2nd. Interment was in Mojave Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mel Smith, Bert Satterfield, Jr., Hub Stevens, Larry Cleveland, Tom Shuell and Gordon Bunn.
