Marilyn Lorraine Hibbard has gone home… we all said our goodbyes on the morning of the 5th of January 2013.
Marilyn Lorraine Fitzpatrick was born in early spring, March 7, 1933; Mom was born at the beginning of the Great Depression in rural northern Michigan where communities were tightly knit and parents were strongly religious; in these times frugality was implanted on all… Growing up Marilyn and her family were forced to be thrifty and to make do with what they have. The opportunity to enjoy new glamorous movies, parties, and many of the fun things we take for granted was unavailable.
Mom was smart with a very quick wit. She qualified for the gifted children program and attended the Accelerated School System, along with her sister Mary Lou through the high school level. She became a flight attendant, and met David Hibbard. Dad was and Airman based in Colorado; in short order they traveled to Texas to be married in Houston in 1955. At the end of Dad's enlistment they moved east to New Hampshire where they started a family while Dad was at the University of New Hampshire.
As kids Mom and Dad supported us boys (tally-whackers everywhere! as she put it) in all the ways that their parents could not, we skied on water and snow, hiked, camped, and spent most of our summers outdoors. They often volunteered as Boy Scout fundraisers, to help in any way for us to experience life in new ways. Our home was open to many of the neighborhood children, raising all of us to be positive and passionate; sometimes we were a tad-bit unwilling kicking and screaming through some of life's lessons.
Our Mom was a strongly opinionated woman, as kids we knew that she liked to beat a different drum and made sure we knew that it was ok to do so. She must have felt a need to accomplish more, so she changed her lifestyle and moved back to Michigan to care for her father, who she loved, until his death in 1975.
She certainly enjoyed challenging us all because she took a path that led away from us boys, geographically, and led to her becoming a very successful business woman in Bay City, Michigan; providing outsourced labor in the Information Technology field without benefit of any formal training or college. She sold her business in 2001 at its pinnacle and lived the last 12 years in New Hampshire and Maine. She wanted to be near her four boys and our families. She befriended anyone who smiled at her and loved her dog Toto. She did not take kindly to fools and politicians. She was not an activist, but would support just- causes in her own way.
As of late she confessed that she had been a very rebellious teen, a stunning stewardess, scared but talented musician, a wife once maybe twice; or three times (we aren't sure), an artist, a writer...and best of all ……. a Mom. She always blended in well with most any group and championed the underdog. The glass was always half full, and if it wasn't she would fill it …. She always dreamed aloud for big events and accomplishments. She liked the glamorous era of Jane Russell, Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Benny Goodman, and the finer things in life. In later years her house was full of those things that she has been deprived of …...
Our Mom bravely and elegantly handled Alzheimer's and a short battle with cancer that ultimately took her life. The last four years she attended many track-meets, basketball games, plays, music sessions of her grand children and children. She was often cheering in the stands for both teams and would identify "her kids" on the field or court.
Mom was predeceased by her father and mother Helen & Leroy Fitzpatrick; and her younger sister Mary Lou of the Flint, Michigan Fitzpatrick family. Marilyn was also predeceased by her friend, business partner, Jim Barkman.
Mom is survived by her brother Edwin Fitzpatrick of LaGrange Texas, and Mom's Vegas carousing partner the lovable and wonderful Darlene Lorenzen of Spokane, WA.
Marilyn is survived by her dearly beloved sons and their families, Spencer & Judy Hibbard of Bedford, NH with their children Jacob, and Jessica. Terry & Cindy Hibbard of Derry, NH and their daughter Jody, Bryan & Suzanne Hibbard of Wolf Mountain in Spotsylvania, VA. With their daughters Cassie Ann Schettino, and Corissa Webb. Mark & Sara Hibbard also of Bedford, NH with their troop of kidz Marissa Goodnow, Tucker, Stephanie Sousa, Letti, and Anika.
All of Marilyn's sons have become reasonably assiduous citizens who rose above their atypical childhoods despite an outrageous and scandalous loving mother.
