Services Held For Jim Thoms

Funeral services for Jim Thoms, former Mojave postmaster, were held on Monday, December 11th.
Mr. Thoms had been appointed postmaster of the Mojave facility in 1958, and had five employees under his direction. In 1961 the Mojave postoffice was chosen as one of the sectional centers to help expedite delivery of mail between various, population and geographic.areas. Mojave become the regional distribution center for a1l of the Antelope Valley, and Mr. Thoms saw the new postoffice building built and his work force increase to 75.
Before his appointment as the postmaster, he was partner in a firm that built the Country Modern group of homes on the west side.
Jim was born in New York City on Feb. 8, 1915. He served in the Navy during WW II. He had been a resident of California.for 38 years and resided in Mojave for 15 years until moving to Lancaster a ~short while ago. The family home was at 42939 Staffordshire Drive.
He retired from his position as postmaster on Oct. 5, 1972, due to his declining health. He married the former Margaret Gross in Las Vegas on July 24, 1952.
Survivors include his wife at the home, a daughter Mrs. Sandra Cass, Rochester, N. Y.; two step sons, Fred McAvoy, Fresno; and Doug Gross, Yosemite; a step daughter, Mrs. Susan Poole, Lancaster, and 6 grandchildren.
The services were conducted by the Rev. Dorsey Allen, former minister of United Methodist Church in Lancaster at noon in the Stickel Mortuaries Chapel. Interment was in the Mojave Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Laymon Alsbury, George Wong, Sam Mitchell, Bob Kieffe, Walter Gee and Harry Beckett.

Jim was born in New York, New York, NY 8 Feb 1915.(159) Jim(160) was the son of Alexander Baillie Thoms and Aluesa Watson Watt. Jim died 6 Dec 1972 in Lancaster, Los Angeles, CA, at 57 years of age.(161) Died of complications from lung cancer. He was a heavy cigarette smoker up until 5 years before he died. He died at home, 42939 Staffordshire Dr., Lancaster, CA. Causes of death on the death certificate are 1. Acute circulatory failure (heart attack), 2. Inanition (exhaustion from lack of nourishment; starvation) and debilitation, 3. Carcinomatosis (Epidromoid carcinoma right lung).

His body was interred 11 Dec 1972 in Mojave, Kern, CA, Mojave Cemetery.(162) Funeral director was Stickel Mortuaries in Mojave, CA. Apparently, James was named after his maternal grandfather, James Watt, and his mother's middle name Watson. Jim lived with his grandfather Charles Martin Thoms while growing up, and looked upon his relationship with his grandfather fondly.

He worked at Coca Cola Bottling Co. in Los Angeles, CA as a saleman. Also worked as an insurance agent for New York Life Insurance in Fresno, CA while married to Helen. Later, he wanted to invest in land and housing in the Mojave area, where he moved with his third wife Margaret. This didn't work out, but he sought and was appointed Postmaster in Mojave, CA, and was also the regional postmaster. He was able to get the regional processing center moved to Mojave and designed the post office in Mojave, CA, which was officially opened in February 1960.

He was married to:
Muriel Louise4 Nickerson (Mary Louise3 Clegg, Enoch Kenyon2, Enoch1, JamesA)(154) was born in South Attleboro, Bristol, MA 14 Apr 1913.(155) Muriel died 16 Nov 1992 in Laguna Hills, Orange, CA, at 79 years of age.(156) She had a heart attack the summer of 1988, and had recovered fairly well - although she complained about the bland food that "Meals on Wheels" brought her. The fatal heart attack happened while shopping in Alpha Beta on Saturday, 14 Nov 1992 with her husband. Her condition was fairly stable until the doctor ordered morphine early Monday morning to relieve chest pain, which lowered her blood pressure enough to where she expired that morning. Her death was sudden, and a shock to her family. Her body was interred 23 Nov 1992 in Inglewood, Los Angeles, CA, Inglewood Park Cemetery.(157)

She married twice. She married James Watson Thoms in Long Beach, Los Angeles, CA, 17 Apr 1937.(158) Officiated by Charles F. Ensign, Clergyman, and witnessed by James' brother Robert.
