State Hospital Escapee Shot In Piute Mts.
Charles Carol Warner, 45, was fatally wounded near his Piute Mt. Cave Tuesday, May 8, when he elected to shoot it out with Kern County Sheriff's deputies who were sent out to bring him in as an escapee from Camarillo State Hospital.
He was the son of Dr. Warner now deceased, who was several years ago, the only doctor in this area and many of our local residents were brought into the world with his assistance.
Charles had escaped, from the hospital four times before and deputies reported he had terrorized residents of the area by firing at them. According to information he had also threatened some of the older residents of Mojave several years ago.
The squad in charge of Lt. Phil Munding was composed of deputies Ellis Byron, Guy Welch, Robert Dennis and Sgt. Gene Young who closed in on the escapee at a spring 200 yards from the cave home. He was shot when he fired on the officers with a .22 rifle, they reported.
