Jack Weldon, Aged Miner Passes
;
Jack Weldon, said to be 82 years old, although this age is questioned by some, well known miner and prospector of the Piute country, died at the Mojave Hospital on Saturday last from causes incident to old age.
Mr. Weldon had been a resident of that part of the country including Cantil, since 1913, coming here from Montana and the Dakotas where he is reported to have been the discoverer of the famous Mammoth mine of Montana which he later lost. He operated the Bryan mine in the Piutes for a number of years and in the early days was the owner of a string of pack mules which was engaged in the transportation of freight from Kelso Valley back into the.mountains to residents there.
A great friend of the Indian tribes occupying that country at that time, his sense of direction was such that he never used a known road when conducting the pack train but would sight the approximate direction to where he wanted to go and light out across the hills. It is said that he never failed to make his goal without getting lost.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Cantil, a son, Joseph and a daughter, Mrs. Elvie Case of Oakland and two grandchildren.
The funeral was held yesterday at 1 p.m. under the direction of the O'Donnell Funeral Home with Rev. Collier of the local Baptist church officiating. At the organ was Mrs. Stanley Richardson while Mrs. Bowlin rendered appropriate hymns. Burial was in the Mojave Cemetery. Notable was the great banks of flowers contributed by the people of Cantil.
