Along with William Wyman, donated the land that now comprises the Homewood campus of Johns Hopkins University. Served as vice-president of the B&O Railroad Company and was responsible for settling a protracted and violent strike in the company in 1874. Also served as president of the Reform League.

From the Baltimore Sun, June 6, 1904:

"The funeral of Mr. William Keyser, philanthropist, political reformer and owner of vast business interests, who died suddenly Friday evening at Brentwood, his country home, near Reisterstown, will take place this morning.

"Services will be held at 11 o'clock in Christ Protestant Episcopal Church...Interment will be private in the family lot in Greenmount Cemetery....

"...It is believed that the direct cause of Mr. Keyser's death was apoplexy, due to the bursting of a blood vessel in his brain.

"Mr. Keyser is survived by Mrs. Keyser and three children--Messrs R. Brent and William Keyser, Jr., and Mrs. Manly. Mrs. Keyser was formerly Miss Mary Brent, daughter of Robert J. Brent, a member of the bar. She married Mr. Keyser November 10, 1858."
