Carbon Monoxide Gas Claims Life of Claude Wiley at Golden Queen

Claude M. Wiley, 38, died from asphyxiation at the Golden Queen mine last Thursday morning and the lives of several others were endangered in an attempt to rescue him. Among those affected by the gas were Paul Hansen, Stanley Westburg, Bob Liburdy and Jack Garbutt. Before the decisive action of mine foreman Ernie Lewis more lives would have been lost.
The accident occurred about 45 feet below the 200 foot level, when on Wednesday the men had driven a rise from one level to the other where they were driving a cross cut. The manway became plugged leaving no vent for the accumulated gas. Thursday morning when the men went to pull the shoot Wiley and Garbutt entered from the top, when Wiley was overcome but Garbutt climbed to the surface threw the air hose down the hole to clear out and called for help.
In an effort to resuscitate Mr. Wiley artificial respiration was maintained for more than two hours and two tanks of oxygen together with heart stimulants were administered without results. Paul Hansen required artificial respiration for an hour and remained overnight in the hospital.
Funeral services were conducted at the Community Church in Mojave Sunday and were in charge of the Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers Union, whose members marched in formation from the hall to the church and thence to the cemetery where under CIO colors last rites were read by their president, John Pengilly and taps were sounded by Ernie Lewis. Rev. Judson Oldfield preached the funeral sermon and songs were rendered by Mesdames George Hodges and C. H. Tyler.. CIO Colors which draped the casket were presented the family. Surviving is his widow two daughters and six brothers- Business houses and mines remained closed during the services.
Mrs. Claude Wiley and family express their sincere appreciation for the sympathy and assistance of all extended during their bereavement.
