I've written the following narrative with the intent of documenting the name change of "Jane Moorhous Barcus" to "Jennie Barkhurst". Note that her death certificate was under the name Jennie Barcus, which was no doubt her legal name. In the same light, records of her daughter "Mary Catherine" generally gave her husband as Peter Hanson, not Hansen, with her name evolving to "Kathryn". I would appreciate it if you would include this on "Jennie's" memorial, in the hopes that it will enlighten others to the record discrepancies. Jane/Jennie is my 1st cousin 3 times removed.

Hanson vs. Hansen, and Barcus vs. Barkhurst - "Jane Moorehous" was listed with her parents in the 1850 census of Union township, Montgomery county, Indiana; her mother, Catharine Mincher "Moorhous" died just 2 months later, and her father 20 years after that. Montgomery county, Indiana marriage index book 4, page 419 lists Jesse Barcus and Jane Moorehouse married 12 March 1856. They were shown as J. C. Barcus, Jane Barcus, and daughter Kate Barcus in the 1860 census of LaFayette, Tippecanoe county, Indiana. They were still there as of the 1870 census, listed as J C. Barcus, Jane Barcus, and daughter Mary C. Barcus. When the 1880 census was enumerated on the 3rd of June, "Jennie" Barcus was living in the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Peter and Catharine Hanson, and their son, Edward Hanson, in St. Louis, Missouri, with "Jennie" still listed as married, but her husband was not in the home. Just 9 months later, the family was living in Chicago, Illinois, where Jessie May Hanson, daughter of "Peter Hanson and Katie Barcus" was born (Cook county birth cert. #3134).

The 1881 probate records of "Peter Hanson Sr.", Cambridge, left everything to his son, "Peter Hanson Jr.". The 1891 probate record of "Peter Hanson Jr.", of Galva, left everything to his wife, "Mary Catharine Hanson", for the support of their children. Peter Jr.'s will was written though on 14 January 1883 while a resident of Paxton, Ford county, Illinois, but probated in Henry county court.

The 1900 census of Galva Township, Henry county, Illinois lists the widowed Kathrine M Hanson, daughter Jessie M. Hanson, son George H. Hanson, and her mother "Jennie Barkurst", listed as married. Indeed, husband "Jesse Barcus" was living in Marion county, Missouri, also listed as married, but living with others. The obituary of "Jennie Barkhurst" stated her husband preceded her in death by 8 years, or about 1908.

On 12 March 1905 in Galva, Jessie May, daughter of Peter "Hansen" and Catherine M. "Barkhurst", age 24 and born in Chicago, married Hiram N., son of John Murchison and Jamima Chisholm, age 25 and born in Wethersfield (Henry county marriage index, book 3, page 44, cert. #8385). Jessie May's Social Security records listed her as the daughter of "Peter Hansen" and "Kathryn Barkhurst".

The 1910 census of Galva shows Kathrine Hanson and her mother, Jennie "Barkhurst", both widowed, living on Center street. Illinois death certificate #14100 shows "Jennie Barcus", her apparent legal name, died in Wethersfield township on 3 July 1916; she was listed as born 23 August 1834 in Crawfordsville, Indiana, with her father listed as Wm. Moorhouse, born Ireland. Burial was in Galva cemetery on 5 July 1916. The death certificate for her daughter, #14281, lists "Kathryn Mary Hanson" died in Weathersfield township on 6 December 1916, with burial in Galva cemetery on 8 December 1916. She was listed as born 26 January 1857 in Crawfordsville, Indiana, the daughter of "J C. Barkhurst" and "Jennie Moorhouse".

No records pertaining directly to Jesse C. Barcus use the spelling "Barkhurst". It is obvious that Jesse and Jane separated, but the terms of that separation remain unknown. It would appear that for reasons unknown, Mrs. Jane Barcus changed her identity to Mrs. Jennie Barkhurst, perhaps to conceal her whereabouts from her husband.
