Elks member Killed in crash
Mr. Myra Alfred Yates, a very active member of Mojave Elks Lodge No. 2059, was killed in a head-on crash on Jan. 24th at 7 a.m. one half mile south of Armistead's Cafe on Highway 6.
Mr. Yates, who was driving north on Hwy. 6 in a Helm's Bakery Truck, was involved in an accident with a '56 2door hardtop driven by Jim Dunigan, 22 years, of Ridgecrest, who was driving south.
According to the CHP report, it is believed that the Dunigan car crossed over into the northbound lane, both vehicles swerved to avoid the crash, but it was unavoidable.
Yates was pronounced dead on arrival at the Ridgecrest Hospital and Dunigan was taken to the Hospital in critical condition by the Christy Ambulance.
Funeral services were held on Jan. 27th at the First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. M. J. Courtney and the BPOE Lodge of Mojave officiating. Burial was in Mojave with the Stickel Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
'Yates, who was born on May 1, 1910 in Missouri, was 53 years old at the time of his death, and resided at 2180 Elm Street in Rosamond, California.
He is survived by his wife Roby M. Yates, a daughter Lahoma Yates of Westminister; three step-children, Chas Walker of Boston, Mass; Richard Walker, of Fullerton; and Sheryl Ball of Orange, Calif. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Francis Hall, of Kansas City, Missouri.
Mr. Yates had been a Helms Bakery Route salesman for 14 years, and was very well known in the Mojave area.
