Run-away driver hits semi-truck Roadblock at 100 miles per hour

Driver still in cmmandered truck when Hit after 75 mph chase through Mojave

A wild cops-and-robbers movie-type chase took place in this desert community last Monday evening, with most local residents missing the drama. But at least one man will never forget the experience, the truck driver who was asked to pull his rig cross-wise in the highway to stop a car traveling 110 miles per hour. The truck driver who found himself unable to get out of his cab before the maniac driver slammed head-on into his trailer rig going over a hundred mph. The truck driver who miraculously escaped injury.
This is the incredible story of that Monday evening suicide ride:
On Dec. 14th at 6:55 p.m. Officer Clay Jenkins of the Mojave CHP substation observed a 1958 Ford two-door sedan passing the intersection on Hwy. 14 about five miles north of Mojave. Officer Jenkins pursued the vehicle for approximately three miles at 80 miles per hour with his red light flashing and siren screaming.
The suspect stopped at the intersection of Highways 14 and 58 and hesitated just a moment before continuing through Mojave with the Highway Patrol officer in pursuit at approximately 75 miles per hour.
When the suspect vehicle surged to 110 miles per hour, Officer Harry Bennett joined the chase, and about seven miles south of Mojave was able to pass the vehicle. After getting in front of the Ford sedan he made numerous air tempts to slow the car down, but the suspect attempted to pass the Patrol vehicle and to ram it from the back, so Officer Bennett let him pass.
At this time the suspect was traveling at about 110 miles per hour, and the Lancaster CHP office was asked to assist in the pursuit. Officer B. Caves was requested to set up a road block one mile north of Rosamond.
Officer Caves commandered a 1962 GMC three-axle van truck towing a three-axle utility trailer driven by Leonard R. Nichols, 26, of Sparks, Nev. and owned by the Nevada Meat and Provision Company of the same city.
The truck was angled across Highway 14 with lights exhibited and turn signal working, and a 36 foot escape route left to the right side of the south lane of traffic.
The suspect vehicle, traveling at about 100 miles per hour, struck the left rear wheel of the truck, fatally injuring the driver, who was identified as Wm. F. Bartell, 52, of Ridgecrest, Calif.
The driver was pinned in the vehicle almost three hours before wreckage could be cut to allow extradition. The body was taken to Stickel Mortuary.
The Ford sedan was demolished in the accident. The right rear .axle, fuel tank and undercarriage of the truck and van sustained major damage.
The truck driver escaped injury, although he did not have time to leave the cab of the truck. His cargo of meat was transferred to another truck.
