COLUMBIA A service in memory of Dorothy Elliott Tart, who departed this life on Saturday, December 29, 2012, will be held at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, in Columbia, S. C. at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2013. Visitation will occur thirty minutes prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow at 12:00 noon in Fort Jackson National Cemetery, where Dot will join her late husband, Colonel Robert W. Tart, Jr., who died July 13, 2011. Dot was born to the late David O. and Nora Stevens Elliott in Columbia on June 23, 1921. She grew up on the 2900 block of Devine Street in the Shandon residential neighborhood with five brothers and one sister. Dot was predeceased by her brothers, Robert Cone Elliott, who was killed in the Battle of the Bulge in January,1945, and Jackie Rudolph Elliott in 1992. She is survived by her sister, Daisy Mona Harris of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; brothers, David O. Elliott, Jr. of Winter Park, Fla., Thomas E. Elliott of Eastover, S. C., Dr. Ronald J. Elliott of Columbia, S. C. as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nephews. Dot had a long and happy life with a large family of both Elliotts and Tarts, who loved her very much. She attended Shandon Elementary, Hand Junior and Columbia High Schools. Dot graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1942 with honors. During her college years, she was an active member of Chi Omega Sorority and was considered one of the best dancers in her class. She taught Latin at Summerville High School for two years and then returned to Columbia, where she was employed by New York Mutual Insurance Company. During this period, she met Captain Tart, posted at Fort Jackson, Columbia. They married in a beautiful military wedding service on post on July 30, 1955. Dot and Robert traveled throughout the world during his military career, which included military and embassy postings in Germany, Taiwan and Argentina. Following Robert's military career, Dot and Robert retired to Boone, N. C., where Robert earned his second master's degree in Industrial Arts from Appalachian State University (his first, following a bachelor's degree from N. C. State, from George Washington University, in Business). They made many new friends to compliment those made throughout the world during their military postings. Those friends have showered her during her last extended illness with beautiful cards and letters for which she, and the family, have been most grateful. She and Robert were active members of the Alliance Bible congregation in Boone, N. C. and are appreciative of its love and support, particularly the pastoral care given by Pastor Roy King of Alliance, following his relocation to Columbia, S. C. Dot's greatest last desire was to let all of her family and friends know how much she loved her Lord, her husband, Robert, her family and her many friends, world-wide, who have cared about and for her over the years. She wanted to extend to her personal care givers, Bonnie Mellert, Mary Carter, and the dedicated staff of Life Care Center of Columbia her heartfelt appreciation for their loyal and personal concern for her best interests.
