Charles E.Packard of Peru, Ind, a member of the family for whom Packard street is named died yesterday while on a visit to Decatur. He was 96 years old. Mr. Packard had been visiting in the home of Mr. and Mrs. charles Ingram, 947 N. water street, where he was found dead in bed at noon. Mr. and Mrs. Ingram were old friends of Mr. Packard with whom he often stayed on periodical visits to this city.
The body was take to Brintlingers funeral home where arrangements await the arrival of his daughter in law, Mrs. Mae Packard of Peru, Ind, with whom he made his home. A granddaughter, Mary Jane Antrim now in Shanghi, China is believed to be his closet relative.
Mr. Packard many years ago lived on the site of the present Christian Science church. He was employed here by Linn and Scruggs.
He was a grandson of Silas Packard who came from Vermont to Illinois in 1830 and under the administration of President Andrew Jackson took title to 160 acres of land north of the Wabash right of way and west of Water street. Later this land was laid out as a subdivision of Decatur and the streets were named for members of the Packard family including Mason street now Wabash ave. and Marietta street for two children of Silas Packard and King street for Marietta Packards husband.
Silas Packards family included Silas, Jr, who laid out the addition and Edward Packard, the father of Charles E. Packard. Mrs. Robert L. Hunt of Decatur is a foster daughter of Silas Jr. who died in 1908 at the age of 79.
