"Called by Death: Mrs. Ellen Buckley, a Pioneer Resident, Expires This Morning, Companion for 61 Years Left," Argus [Rock Island], March 26, 1903, p. 5,
"One of the oldest of Rock Island's citizens, and a pioneer of the county, passed away this morning in the person of Mrs. Cornelius Buckley, who died at 1 a.m. of the infirmities of age at the family home, 2815 Sixth avenue.
Mrs. Buckley was 88 years of age, having been born in Mallow, County Cork, Ireland, in 1815. Her maiden name was Miss Ellen Sullivan. Before leavig her native land for America, which she did in 1848, she was married to Mr. Buckley. The family, after living about five years in the east, removed to this county, near the Osborn postofffice, and there resided till nine years ago, when the removal to this city was made.
Married 61 Years
The aged husband, who survives, is now deprived of his partner for a period greater than the life of the average person. Mr. and Mrs. Buckley Feb. 11 of this year celebrated their 61st wedding anniveersary. The husband is still in good health, though bowed down in deepest sorrow by his bereavement.
Of the nine children born to the couple seven survive, three being sons and four daughters. They are: William and Cornelius Buckley, Jr., Mrs. Ellen Enright, Mrs. Charles Benson, and Mrs. Margaret O'Connell, of this city, P.H. Buckley of Joslin, and Sister Vincentia, who is in a convent at Stemper, Fla. There is also left an aged sister, Mrs. Mary Lawless, of Port Byron.
The funeral will take place at 9 o'clock Saturday morning from Sacred Heart church, with interment [sic] at St. Marguerite's cemetery, Davenport."
