Mrs. Mary R. Smith, 78, of Stone Arabia St., Nelliston, died early Monday morning at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

She was born in the Town of Root on November 16, 1923 the daughter of Cesare and Maria Grazia Damico Rappa.
She was educated at Canajoharie Schools.

Mrs. Smith was employed as a machine operator for Life Savers, Canajoharie, retiring June 6, 1980. She was a life long area resident.

Mrs. Smith was a member of St. James Roman Catholic Church, Fort Plain. She was a member of Local Bakers & Confectionary Union for Life Savers.

She was married in 1950 to Earl "Ozzie" Smith in Canajoharie. He died in September 1966. Mrs. Smith was also predeceased by two brothers: John and Christopher Rappa and two sisters: Anna Lamanna and Marion Donatucci.
She is survived by one daughter: Mary G. Clayburn of Palatine Bridge; two sons: Stanley C. Smith and Gregory C. Smith of Canajoharie; one sister: Margaret Salamone of Canajoharie; one brother: Salvatore "Zeke" Rappa of Ames; three granddaughters: Candice Smith, Jennifer Clayburn and Jill Clayburn all of Palatine Bridge; three grandsons: Gregory Smith of Fultonville, Jayson Smith and Anthony Smith of Canajoharie; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A 9:15 a.m. Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, January 17 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., Canajoharie, followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Reid St., Fort Plain with Father Kenneth Swain. Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring. Calling hours are Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
