On Feb 21, 1865, he enlisted as a Corporal in Company D, Wisocnsin 49th Inf. Reg. and mustered out on November 1 1865. Later in his life, he was active in the GAR.
He graduated from Hillsdale College in 1872 and Harvard Divinity in 1875. On Oct 4 1876, he married Flora Preston (Hillsdale class of 1876) in Nemaha, Kansas. He and his wife traveled extensively. In addition to his ministerial work, he was a published author.
He served as a pastor in New York City prior to going to Sabatha, Kansas where he served for twenty-one years. He then served as pastor for eight years in Laramie, Wyoming.
He and his wife went to Europe in 1916 where he studied modern language and history. They were at the University of Grenoble in France when World War I broke out. He remained in France until 1919, when they returned to Hollywood, California.
In Hollywood, they were members of the Hollywood Congregational Church. He died suddenly September 20, 1920.
