IVAN R. DAWSON
PORTLAND, OR., Sept. 26, (TO THE EDITOR) – The death of Mr. Ivan R. Dawson is a loss not only hard to be borne by his immediate friends, but the whole community in which he was such a potent factor for all that was good, will deplore his sudden taking away. It is a rare thing, indeed, to find a man whose chief joy was in doing good, in giving pleasure to others, in comforting the downhearted and afflicted, in helping the poor; whose voice was never heard save in encouragement, who always helped, and never hindered his fellow-man. Just as all his justice was always tempered with mercy, He was ever charitable, and in many homes there is morning at the thought that no more in this world will his kind voice be heard or the warm pressure of his hand be felt. To those in whose homes h has come and gone for the past twenty two years the honored and the welcome guest, where he had by his great helpful nature made their sorrows lighter, their joys brighter, their home ties sweeter, the blow falls with crushing force, the more terrible because it was so unexpected. To them remains the satisfaction of a life well spent and thankfulness that he was spared to them so long. To them the sweetness of his memory was but faintly typified in the lovely flowers that mark his last resting place in Riverview. To know Mr. Dawson was a pleasure once enjoyed never forgotten. Cultivated, refined, Intensely loyal to his friends, forbearing, forgiving, on who loved his fellow men – what nobler tribute can be offered to his memory. X.
