Thurston County

Death: Dec. 21, 2012
Central City

My Aunt Velma was born June 3, 1911, on her parents' farm near Rosalie, Nebraska. When she was seven years old, the family moved to a farm west of Fullerton, Nebraska.
Velma attended country school and graduated from Fullerton High School in the Class of 1928. She was a faithful alumnae and was honored several years at the annual banquet as oldest graduate attending.
She worked as an operator for the Fullerton Telephone Company until her marriage. She and Leon Duke Dudney were married August 20, 1930, at her parents' home, beneath an arbor of yellow roses.
Velma was a farm wife who raised chickens and eggs, separated cream, grew and canned vegetables. She was a 4-H mother, a member of the Wall Street neighborhood club, home extension, Fullerton Women's Club, Fullerton United Methodist Church Circle, and several card clubs.
Confirmed as a Methodist in 1927, Velma knew her scriptures better than most and preached a better sermon than any pastor. Her eulogy for my father ended with her patting his coffin and saying, "Gordie, Gordie. Who ever thought I'd get the last word."
Card-playing is a blood sport in the Jenkins family, and Velma was a master. Pinochle, 5-, 10-, 13-point pitch, canasta Velma could outbid, outplay, outshout her brothers and her mother.
Velma is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Duane and Dorothy Forbes Dudney of Hastings, Nebraska; daughter and son-in-law, Jaci and Glen Miller of Kingston Springs, Tennessee; and sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Richard Wilson of Ocala, Florida. There are five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a soon-to-be born great-great-granddaughter. Her nieces, nephews and their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren will also keep her memory alive.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, Leon; parents, Lot and Bessie; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gordon and Marece DeVore Jenkins, Charles and Ruth Arrasmith Jenkins, and Harold and Margaret Tierney Kaveney Jenkins; and infant sisters Gladys and Pauline.
